Come on out the weekend after Thanksgiving (Friday too) if you are looking for some holiday gifts or just need a lemon bar.
We’ll be ready for you rain, shine, or lack of power (that has only happened once during an open house) from 9am to 4pm each day. If you need to come in the evening, just call to make sure we will be here.

Well we have been busy! We started the season a little early this year with a trip to Pacific Grove California and our first out of state fair - The Good Old Days event. It’s great to have siblings in beautiful cities and we seem to be making a habit of visiting and showing in these towns. Works pretty well for us!

Then we went to Tokeland (yes, if you are not from Washington State that really is the name of the town) out on the coast and participated in an Artists tour out there.

Took a Pottery class in Hawaii at the Donkey Mill Art Center with Ellen Shankin. Great instructor, great location and a lot of fun.

Delivered Garden Art to Joy Creek Nursery in Scappoose Oregon (Near Portland).

And we just participated in our favorite fair of the year – Sorticulture, in Everett Washington. Garden Art specific – this event is held every June in Legion Park, and put on by the City of Everett – a really well run event!

And now we will focus on the local farmers market in Olympia where we are guest vendors – meaning we can participate on Thursdays or Fridays. So we hope to make it to the market at least once a week if there is space.

Hope everyone out there is having a busy, joy filled Spring and early Summer!

Well is certainly has been a great fall here in the Pacific Northwest. The days are officially longer than the nights and we are spending more time in the studio. Most of what I have been working on this month is related to a tile show that we will be attending this Saturday in Seattle.

As part of Artisan Tile Northwest we will be showing our city scape and newer sgraffito tiles at this October 1st event. We have been having fun with this newer (for us) surface decoration technique. But I also must confess that I had a bit of a glaze malfunction in this last load out of the kiln – and so will have less of this style work than I had planned at the show . . . . better luck next time! But I am loving the freedom of the technique and the truly one of a kind results. So expect to see more of this work in the future. It still amazes me how much trial and error goes in to getting something right.

Here is some information on the tile show;

This Saturday, April 16th, is our first official outing of 2011. We have been making new work since December and now we will start selling at the Farmers Market, Community Fairs and from the Studio.

The Tokeland Art Tour will run from 10am-5pm on the 16th. And the food at the Historic Tokeland Hotel is good – in a classic old timey way.

Here is a photo taken as I prepare bird baths. Once they come out of the kiln, I need to fit them with sticks.

It creates a forest of sorts in the studio.

We have fired the kiln several times in the last month and I will post a few picture after we get back from the Tokeland Art Tour.

The weather here has been both cold and wet. This is not a subjective observation but a fact. The average daily temperature has been 5 degrees colder than last year in the month of February. And the rain gets judged by how many times a day we think we might be able to get in a walk before the deluge returns . . . and there have been very few walks lately! In fact we had 10 inches of snow - light fluffy snow!

So what has been going on while we have been nestled in the cozy studio? Any thing but sleep really. We have been working on garden art – new houses and baths, totems, as well as a few whimsical adventures into bunny land.

The bunny bottle pictured below is part of my collaborative work with Agapanther Tiles. I made the first one last fall for the Artisan Tile Northwest’s annual show in Seattle. And I am working on two more - just in time for spring. The other two pieces are Dave’s and my response to “what should we do with these little bunnies I made”. So we each created a box and used the little sculpted creatures for handles! They should be ready by April to make an appearance at the Olympia Farmers Market, on one of our Thursday or Friday outings. (We don’t go to the market every Thursday and Friday – so feel free to give a call if you are wondering when we are going)

Looking forward to getting out more – but I think we have made good use of the challenging weather!

Summer’s over! I can tell, not by the weather but, by the amount of time we have been spending in the studio. And being the new owner of a web site, I’ve also learned that finding the time to post in the summer is more difficult than the rest of the year, as the gardening and the desire to be outdoors is so compelling that “indoor chores” fall far behind.

So here is what is happening this month.

We just finished setting up a show at Santa Lucia Coffee in Centralia. I’m very pleased with it and encourage anyone who lives in the area or is coming up the I-5 corridor in the month of September to check it out. Here is a link to their site for directions. www.santaluciaroasters.com/

It’s called “Sacred Water”. I made a series of Shadow Boxes and Holy Water Fonts that speak to the essential nature of water in our lives. From lakes and streams, to our places of worship, to a a good cup of coffee – water is at the heart of our existence. Here are a few photos from that installation:

"Our Lady of the Morning"

We have had a couple of great kiln loads in August and will be taking some of that fresh out of the kiln tableware to the Olympia Farmers market on September 2nd and 3rd, and later in the month too if the weather holds!
